NPLD is the nation’s largest one-day volunteer event for public lands. This year, it occurs on Saturday, September 24th. During NPLD, volunteers typically clean up trash and debris, remove invasive species, restore historic sites and trails, plant native trees and build bird and bat boxes. The projects depend on the needs of the public lands. In 2010, over 170,000 volunteers contributed over $15 million in improvements to public lands in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.

It is fitting for NPLD and the Natural Service Network to collaborate, as both programs encourage young people to volunteer and be active outside. New members of the Natural Service Network should consider launching their volunteer efforts on NPLD. The nationwide effort is a great catalyst for starting projects and showing young people that they are not alone in their efforts to improve public lands. With NPLD occurring at the end of September, teachers can also use the day to jump-start an environmental education or service learning curriculum.
Along with being an important day of service, NPLD also provides multiple resources to support volunteer activities in September and all year long. The NPLD website, www.publiclandsday.org, has tools useful to Natural Service Network members including:

Contests and Awards: Enter photos and videos into annual contests and nominate a NPLD volunteer for the Volunteer of the Year Award. Young people are encouraged to participate!

Manuals and Kits: Download guides for developing volunteer projects, advertising your event and soliciting donations.

Webinars: View free webinars on social media marketing and press releases.

Educational Resources: Learn how to integrate environmental, health and recreational education into your volunteer activities.

Visit www.publiclandsday.org to register your NPLD event or look for existing events to join. If you have any questions, email npld@neefusa.org. Please remember to volunteer on September 24th!
