Burton 4-H kicks off the year at the beginning of September and ends in the month of June.
We meet on the first Monday of the month at the Burton Elementary Cafeteria at 7 PM in Porterville.
Here are the facts about Mini Members vs. Members:
Primary Members (Mini Members): A youth must be at least 5 years old or in Kindergarten as of December 31st of the 4-H program year (July 1 - June 30). In Tulare County, the youth are only involved in 4-H at the club and project level. It is at the discretion of the community club leader as to whether the mini member project will be offered. A mini member signs up for the “Mini Member Project”, 9-A (no other projects), and pays the program and duplications fees ($16.00). This member does not participate in any activities at the county level or beyond, including any competitive events. The only approved animal projects for primary members are dogs, rabbits, rats, cats, poultry, cavies, mice, embryology, entomology, marine science, pygmy goats, and therapeutic animal projects. These members are allowed to participate in these projects through the “Mini Member Project” as long as curriculum is provided and activities are developed which do not involve ownership or care of an animal which, by its size and/or nature is unsuitable for a young handler. At Burton 4-H we have mini members that do arts and crafts, rocketry, sewing, cake decorating, rocketry etc. They can’t be involved in large animals but can raise small animals like rabbits and poultry but cannot show them at the fairs.
4-H Member: A youth must be 9 years old or in the 4th grade as of December 31st of the 4-H
program year (July – June 30). You are eligible for membership in 4-H through December 31st
of the year in which you turn 19 years of age. If a Primary Member turns 9 years old after
December 31st of the 4-H program year and desires to join 4-H as a regular member, they
must wait until July 1st to join for the upcoming 4-H year as a primary member, they remain a
primary member for the balance of the year.
